How to attract and retain residents in a region facing depopulation? What criteria do people use to make their decision to move, stay, or return? Numbers such as local GDP, housing prices, and connectivity do not always tell all, it is also a matter of emotions and other ”soft” factors. What can a municipality or region do – how to strengthen its attractiveness, how to take advantage of digitalisation, how to engage residents and potential inhabitants?

As part of the European Week of Regions and Cities 2021, Päijät-Häme Regional Council and Next2Met Interreg Europe project will hold a workshop on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 from 10:30 to 12:00 (Finnish time) with the title

Is Your Region Worth Your Love? – Soft Digitalisation, Regional Attraction and Engagement

The workshop will examine the elements of regional attraction from the point of view of ”soft digitalisation” and participation. In the shadow of COVID-19, what is the meaning of ”locality” and ”multilocality”; how do people perceive the place where they live and how would they participate in the decisions affecting their surroundings?

In addition to the municipality of Asikkala, participants will hear experiences from the Hamburg region of Germany and the village of Veberöd in southern Sweden. At the event, it is possible to participate in a discussion and network with stakeholders.
