BIOREGIO, Regional circular economy models and best available technologies for biological streams, boosts the bio-based circular economy through the transfer of expertise on the best available technologies and co-operation models. BIOREGIO also aims to improve regional polices by increasing the focus on the bio-based circular economy.

The project will increase knowledge-related policies and technologies of biological streams, and improve the recycling rates of biological materials. Activities include the joint development of policies as well as describing regional biological streams and defining the best available practices.

The Päijät-Häme region is represented by the project’s lead partner LAB University of Applied Sciences and the Regional Council of Päijät-Häme. The business potential of the circular economy in Finland has been valued at almost three billion euro. However, new business opportunities require international co-operation so that the knowledge of Finnish excellence spreads. The Päijät-Häme region is a pioneer in advanced waste management and industrial symbiosis.

The participating countries are Finland, Slovakia, Romania, France, Spain and Greece. The five-year-long project started in January 2017 and has a total budget of 1.5 million euro.

The Regional Council of Päijät-Häme will focus on policy design, implementation and monitoring. We will benchmark the good practices of managing and using structural funds in other regions. The Regional Council of Päijät-Häme also has the role of facilitating the implementation of new projects, and reforming the management and strategic focus of the policy instruments.

The measures included in the Päijät-Häme bio-based circular economy roadmap, prepared as part of the BIOREGIO project in co-operation with the stakeholders in the region, will mainly be implemented through the Southern Finland European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) programme. The roadmap specifies the objectives of the bio-based circular economy in the region in more detail, demonstrating the smart specialisation spearhead of the regional strategy and programme of Päijät-Häme and supporting the competitiveness strategy of the Lahti urban area.
