Design has a strong tradition in the Päijät-Häme Region. Co-operation between the Institute of Design, which is part of LAB University of Applied Sciences, and companies is of utmost importance in the creation of a regional design cluster. Design creates added value to national and regional competitiveness when it comes to business. Companies in Päijät-Häme utilise design knowledge in industrial production.
The design expertise in Päijät-Häme is especially focused on industrial design, branding, communication and information design. The goal is to raise the competitiveness of SMEs by using design to improve the quality and user-friendliness of products and services. The region’s local government officers and representatives of universities and the business community hold a design meeting twice a year to exchange information and assess activities concerning regional development in design.
The Päijät-Häme design roadmap is co-ordinated by LAB University of Applied Sciences. The roadmap process brings together the region’s actors, including local businesses. It outlines the goals and actions for the use, visibility and strategic status of design in the region.
